Sighting history and observations of southern right whales following satellite tagging off South Africa

چکیده
In September 2001, satellite tags were deployed on 21 southern right whales (Eubalaena australis) in South African coastal waters, including eight cows accompanied by newborn calves. To date there have been 26 re-sightings of 11 these individuals (or their calves) at intervals 27-1,502 days. So far, 85.7% the females with calves re-sighted a second calf, comparable to those that same showed before tagging. All seem shed between 27 and 36 months Superficial remote examination wound sites indicated frequent formation divots accompanying scarring cyamids, but little sign localised (and none regional) swelling.

Whales from Space: Counting Southern Right Whales by Satellite
We describe a method of identifying and counting whales using very high resolution satellite imagery through the example of southern right whales breeding in part of the Golfo Nuevo, Península Valdés in Argentina. Southern right whales have been extensively hunted over the last 300 years and although numbers have recovered from near extinction in the early 20(th) century, current populations ar...

BACKGROUND The southern cassowary (Casuarius casuarius johnsonii) attains 1.8 m in height and over 80 kg in weight. These large birds are equipped with large claws and, although not a direct threat to humans, they have caused serious injury to handlers and members of the public. METHODS AND RESULTS This study describes chemical immobilisation, restraint, transport and post-monitoring (satelli...

Historically, southern right whales were widely distributed in New Zealand waters. This population, was driven to commercial extinction following extensive exploitation during the early 19th century (Dawbin 1986). It was further depleted by illegal Soviet hunting in 1950-1970 (Tormosov et al. 1998). While right whale sightings around mainland New Zealand remain rare, up to 165 whales can be fou...
متن کاملHistory of 'swine fever' in Southern Africa.
The histories of the two swine fevers in southern Africa differ widely. Classical swine fever (hog cholera) has been known in the northern hemisphere since 1830 and it is probable that early cases of 'swine fever' in European settlers' pigs in southern Africa were accepted to be that disease. It was only in 1921 that the first description of African swine fever as an entity different from class...
